Why have a Website ?

Supporting your existing customers
An Internet presence can enable you to support your existing client base by providing them with useful information, which in turn can strengthen customer loyalty and generate future business opportunities. Establish a pro-active customer service oriented image by providing technical specifications, user stories, sales techniques and commentary on market/industry developments. By answering frequently asked questions (FAQ's) on the Internet, you can shift the cost of customer support away from your organisation. The more technical your business, the greater the savings in this area. 82% of companies with online access report that they have found something useful on the Internet, with 51% accessing services relevant to their job. Moreover, 56% use it to obtain information about companies and products, whilst 47% use it for research.

Enhance communication with business partners
If your company has information which your business partners need to help them do business with you, why not put it on a Website? Imagine the time and savings that can be gained by eliminating unnecessary telephone calls and faxes to send technical data, product specifications, pricing schedules and other information to the people that you do business with every day. Moreover, you can use the Internet to point customers towards the Website of complimentary organisations to your own, and vice versa, thus adding value to your services.

Improve internal communication
A Website is a perfect place to store information about your organisation that might be useful to your staff, your management or your shareholders. If some of that information is sensitive, you can easily restrict access to it. Alternatively, you could place it on an Intranet; a private company network based on the principles of the larger Internet. However you want to organise it, the technology can be used to provide easy access to information about company policies, procedures, news and even internal career opportunities.

Distribute information
Whether for gathering or distributing information, a web presence is an excellent means of engaging, and sharing information with your audience. In a few short years, the Internet has become a world-wide library of information and resources. If you need to distribute information, why not have your audience pay to access it (albeit for the cost of a local phone call) rather than pay for the distribution costs yourself?

Make it easy for customers to request specific information from your company, place a purchase order, query a database or send an email with user request forms. Your site can also gather valuable customer information with customer reply surveys.

Gain market knowledge
The Internet can be used to track and gain knowledge about the people who visit your web site. This is something that no other media can do as efficiently or cost-effectively. You can find out the geographical location of visitors, how long they spent at your web site, what they were interested in while they visited, how they traversed the web to find your web site, even what type of software and computer they were using at the time. All this information adds up to instant and comprehensive feedback from potential customers. Allowing you to make strategic decisions based on knowledge, rather than assumption.

The following is some sections from a letter to a potential client

"A web site is far more than the html on the screen. My company is experienced in business process reengineering and we aim to find out what the company really wants to do and then we design the web site around the business requirements.

Our software engineers are all very experienced developers used to working on corporate systems and I have no doubt that you will not find that there is any aspect of a web site we cannot produce. A current project we are working on is to produce an intranet for a company of 3000 employees and also to produce a software system similar to, but much more complicated than a telephone help desk system. This uses web browsers and Java applets running alongside Java beans on the servers.

So that you get an idea of our capabilities I have included some Case Studies and some of our fundamental aims and beliefs.

K.K. Internet

Technical Capabilities
We operate on two rented servers in different locations offering either UNIX or NT servers. Both servers are connected to the main internet communications network infrastructure and are fully backed up and available.

The Unix servers are based in London and we have written a number of PERL modules to support email redirection and reporting of hits on the web sites hosted there. We can mail anyone every time someone looks at a site and report where they found the site!

The NT servers are based in Manchester and offer a range of additional features. We use Microsoft Front Page and Inter dev as well as Visual Café to develop sites as this gives us a quick and easy way to manage the sites. However we go way beyond the capabilities of a simple Front Page web site by adding Vbscript and Javascript to the client side as well as running Active Server Pages on the server.

We also provide database access using ODBC connections to Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL server.

This enables us to build e-commerce enabled sites. We also have access to secure servers.

Software Development

Apart from basic HTML and image manipulation using Adobe PhotoShop we can provide experts in:-

  • JavaScript
  • Visual Basic
  • C++
  • Java
  • Visual café
  • SQL
  • Select Enterprise ( a top of the range business process and data modelling and CASE tool)

Approach to Web site Development
A web site is easy to produce. Almost anyone can do it. The difficulty comes in getting it to produce the results that the client wants.

We like to work very closely with the client and take them through the possibilities in an as non technical way as possible. We stress that the site is a "living being" and can and should be constantly evolved. We try to work as part of the clients organisation to identify areas that they probably ignored.

It is also easy to add many features that jazz up the site. Java applets work great on an intranet but will only work on a small proportion of internet connected PC’s and they take too much time to download. As a rule we do not use any specific plug ins such as Flash as although it works well, it does only work if you have the machine set up properly. It seldom adds much to the business process.

We try to keep the site smart, short and to the point - but able to provide as much information as possible. We keep downloads as small as possible and work on graphics to compress them to avoid delays.

At the initial meetings with clients we like to provide a number of options. The client can choose the style he likes, we may produce up to four separate outline sites so that the client can evolve the style he wants from the provided options..

Web Site Publicity
Having a web site is one thing, getting people to visit the site is another. We have invested heavily in software and procedures for working on our web site publicity with search engines. We are confident we can get high rankings in the major search engines for selected phrases. Once we get a high ranking position we then ensure that that position is maintained by frequent review and adaptation of gateway pages.

Pricing
Many web design companies charge on a per page basis. We price on the amount of productive time we spend on it. Prices start from around £100 for a basic site. Even a simple basic site may have had a number of different versions submitted to the client so that he can choose the most appropriate style for his company. You will find that we are realistically priced and will not get bogged down in contracts. We do what the customer wants.

We are totally customer focused and rely on a good reputation. Many of our customers have become friends and we feel that we are an important part of their company. At the top end there is no limit. Web sites such as the BBC site can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. While we can not claim to have completed such a big commission we are capable of providing the technical support and the team to build such a site. Our pricing policy reflects many things, the amount of time we spend on the site, the complexity of the technical solution and the staff we have to use on it as well as the amount of web space and machine support we provide.

Pricing also depends on the usefulness of the site to our portfolio. A small site for an important customer which can advertise our services will be favoured. We also enter into agreements with clients where we charge nothing for the site layout and design but take a payment based on the number of genuine hits the site gets.

We are open to suggestion and aim to get a customer onto the web in the most cost effective way for him and us.

Why people don’t want a site

They don’t own a PC
They don’t need a PC. We provide the web site and will fax on emails we receive on their behalf.

They already have a site
Is it giving them a profit. Are they fully exploiting the benefits of a web site?

They don’t believe they will gain anything from the internet
Nearly every company will have a web presence soon. They should not get left behind.

Its too expensive
We can work out some arrangement where they only pay when the site complements their business in some way. Either by profit sharing or payment based on number of hits or responses generated.
It can save them money by getting people to download their brochures and details.

As a trial we can also provide a simple free site. This will get them on the web!
